Church Work Day Fundraiser

Youth Pastor, Giving out scholarships can be so complicated.

Case in Point: A student is always needing money to go to an event, then you see them show up with brand new shoes, talking about their brand new PS5, etc. Did you make the right call in helping them?

Why not give them the opportunity to work for their money? One day a month, for 3-4 months before the event, they can work for 2 hours.

If you were going to give it to them anyways, why not say "Our new policy is to have students come in to the church and work to earn the money they need."

Guess what, some may never go to another event again... They don't Want to have to work to pay for their event... So, if they don't work, they don't go. That's an interesting conclusion to come to. However, what they get out of the extra time at church is mentorship in learning a servant's heart, how to work as unto the Lord, and how to develop positive self awareness as a part of the future work force.

Sample Work Program:

1. Send a letter or email to parents of students who continually need a scholarship to get to camp.

Sample Email:

Parents,

I’m sending this email to you to alert you and your family to a limited opportunity to earn scholarship money for summer camp this year. Students can earn scholarship money for church events on a regular basis.  Their hour(s) will get logged by their supervisor for the day. They will be able to earn a minimum wage scholarship check for their time of serving assignments during their one-hour to two hours of work per week.

They will be held accountable to serve at a high standard  “As unto the Lord.” At the end of each shift, they will fill out an evaluation form as a part of their feedback for the day.

2. POW WOW (15 min. Take time to set the foundation properly)

1. Start the work day with a brief devotion about Biblical work ethic. 2. Walk them through the evaluation form that they will be measured by.

3. Tell them that when they are done with their task, they need to find you and ask the magic question, " What else can I do?" and when they are done with That, ask again, and again, and again.

4. Tell them what each of them will get started on and provide training as needed for each task. (have the equipment ready to go)

As a part of the training, make sure they understand that this time of serving is about quality of work. We don't want them rushing through the tasks, otherwise, they will need to redo them.

5. Release the Blood Hounds! lol

3. Bring the group in to pow wow #2 after about 45 min. or sooner if effort breaks down. Give them a chance to eat a snack and have something to drink while you talk together.

Ask Samples:
How's it going?

If you were at a job, what would your supervisor think about how you're doing so far?

Bring up an example of something good and a level of effort that you've noticed needs improvement... Have some fun with it, and encourage everyone to work hard as "Unto the Lord."

Remind them about the Evaluation form they are going to fill out at the end (walk them through it again).

4. Youth Leaders walk throughout the facility and ensure that all the workers have what they need to do their Job and as they get done, provide them with the next opportunity until it's time to POW WOW Again.

 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. Meet at the Beginning point for POW WOW #3. Pass out the Evaluation Forms and give them time to fill them out and self assess. Ask if they would like to read theirs. Don't give any more feedback on their performance, just thank them for sharing and collect the papers. What you will notice over time, is improved focus, and better work quality as they serve with the attitude of Christ, work as unto the Lord, and learn to have diligent hands, and do good quality work.

7. The Details

You will need to keep the evaluation forms and use them to track hours so that you can pay them. Oregon Law required us to write them a check with no official strings attached. So, it's a matter of trust between you and the parents. Yes, I know that is risky, but the money for the work program is only to be used for  X___ Event. I encouraged them to cash the check and either bring it straight to us to put into their account, or keep it in their personal account untouched until X___ Event arrived.
